Why Adobe?
There
are many advantages/benefits for choosing to build with adobe. For the
"owner/builder" the adobe is probably the easiest material to build
with. Since it is made of mud it is easy to cut and shape. The mortar used to
bond the bricks together is also mud. Don't we all have some experience with
mud?
While
you can make your own adobes, the cost to purchase enough adobes for a 2,000 sq.
ft. home range from $2,000 to $3,000. The cost variables depend on location but
also on the type of adobe used, traditional vs. stabilized.
In the
manufacturing process, the amount of energy used, and the amount of pollution
created varies depending on the material. Compared to a concrete block which
consumes nearly 30,000 B.T.U.s, the adobe requires less than 2,000 B.T.U.s per
block. There is also less energy used for transportation since the adobe is a
"local" building material. And since it is local, the manufacturing of
adobes contributes more to the local economy when compared to imported
materials.
For the solar enthusiast the adobe is an ideal material because of its thermal mass properties. In the southwest, the words solar and adobe have been linked so often that they have become one word; Solar adobe.
